Is Stress Making You Fat?

Maybe, if you’re over-stressing your system. Some level of stress is a good thing, pushing us to grow and expand, but not all of it. When the level of stress you have is overwhelming, then it will start to fire off messages to you in the form of physical, mental, and emotional imbalances.

Over-stress your system too much or too long and you could hit adrenal exhaustion.

Adrenal exhaustion is when your body is in a constant state of “flight or fight.” The accumulation of stress from internal and external factors, such as difficult relationships, work, travel, and the economy, accumulates and tells your body that it is in danger.

Your body has no way to determine if the perceived danger is real or not, so it responds to all stress as if it is an urgent situation. This causes your body to release additional cortisol, in turn telling your body to store glucose as fat in case it needs it for an emergency.

What are some other signs of adrenal exhaustion?

–          Waking up tired, even after a full night’s sleep.

–          Needing caffeine to wake up or get through the 4 o’clock hour.

–          Feeling on edge or jumpy.

–          Difficulty losing weight, even on a low calorie diet.

–          Craving salt.

So what can you do about it?

Well, the good news is that there is a lot you can do. I come from the school of thought that your body is magical and can naturally cure itself of nearly everything, if given the right circumstances. You must remember that this doesn’t occur overnight and it generally takes 6-12 months to unwind the effects of it as well.

Some easy steps to take:

1. Get honest with yourself. How are you coping? What signs is your body giving you that you are perhaps pushing too hard? Take stock of how you’re really doing. Consider journaling on this topic. Sometimes the things that stress us out most are the things we cherish the most too, like family. That’s why it’s important to get clear on specifically what feels like too much, so you can make empowered choices about how to reduce stress in your life.

2. Get enough B vitamins to rebuild your adrenal cortex. There are a lot of products on the market; it is vital you get one that is high quality. I get my personal supplements from Biotics Research and my favorite B vitamin is Bio-B100. You must order over the phone (800-231-5777) and give them this number: TEPE001 or my name, Kerry Tepedino. This will allow you to set up an account of your own.

3. Be patient. You didn’t get into adrenal failure overnight and you certainly aren’t going to sure it overnight. The body is magical but it’s not a magic trick. It will take time to repair the damage done and rebalance your body’s natural rhythm. In the meantime, incorporate healing modalities like therapy, meditation, massage, and some gentle forms of exercise can help to get you on track.
